Liverpool submitted a bid of €35 million for Samuel Chukwueze in the January transfer window, according to Get French Football News. However, Spanish club Villarreal rejected the bid, thus the Nigerian remained with them.
Liverpool’s Samuel Chukwueze Bid Rejected
Liverpool had a relatively quiet January transfer window, with Takumi Minamino being the only player that they signed. However, it appears this was not through a lack of trying. The club reportedly had a bid of €35 million rejected by Villarreal when they tried to sign 20-year-old winger Samuel Chukwueze.
Instead, the Nigerian winger will remain with Villarreal for the remainder of the season.
No Room at Liverpool
Liverpool’s squad is currently overflowing with attackers and Minamino has struggled to get a look in. This would have been the case had Chukwueze signed for Jurgen Klopp’s side too.
It is unrealistic for Liverpool to expect Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah to play every game, but the reality is that they will play the most. It is difficult for any player to usurp them from their positions.
Each of the aforementioned front three also have multiple cover options in the squad. Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both filled in for Mane successfully, while Takumi Minamino can fill in anywhere across the front three. Both Xherdan Shaqiri and Harvey Elliott can fill in on the right if Mohamed Salah is absent.
Signing a young winger to sit on the bench would only serve to block the pathway to the first team for youngsters already at Anfield. Rhian Brewster has already been forced to go on loan due to a lack of game time. Others, such as Curtis Jones, are on the fringes looking to break into the squad.
Chukwueze has only scored four goals in 21 appearances this season too, suggesting that his quality is not much higher than those already in the squad.
