Liverpool’s young Polish goalkeeper Jakub Ojrzynski has signed a new deal, his first professional contract with the club.

Career so Far

The 17-year-old goalkeeper joined from Legia Warsaw in his native Poland last summer, immediately joining the first-team squad for the summer tour of the USA.

Ojrzynski has spent much of his time with the U18s at Liverpool’s Kirkby Academy base. After gaining international clearance, the young Pole started in the 6-1 victory over arch-rivals Everton in October. He then made nine appearances in the U18 Premier League for the Reds, conceding 20 goals.

The young Pole also made his UEFA Youth League debut during October, and is said to have made progress on his distribution and footwork during training since joining the club.

Liverpool already boast plenty of talented young keepers, as well as 16-year-old Fabian Mrozek, who recently joined the Premier League champions, again from Poland.

These two Polish starlets are joined by Kamil Grabara, a third native Polish goalkeeper, on Liverpool’s books. Klopp also has Irish stopper, Caiomhin Kelleher, in his squad; he could be set to gain valuable experience away from the club on loan in the near future.

All of the Polish stoppers will be hoping they can follow in their countryman, Jerzy Dudek‘s footsteps. Dudek was number one at Anfield between 2001-07, including on that famous night in Istanbul in 2005.

Both Ben Winterbottom and Vitezslav Jaros, two other goalkeepers for whom the club have high hopes, also penned extended deals recently.

Liverpool are now amassing a plethora of high-quality young goalkeepers, with arguably one of the best in the world in Alisson to learn from. Perhaps in the future one or two of these youngsters could reach a similar level to the Brazilian.
